How to get a status match between Avis and

Avis and have a partnership which may allow you to get a status match across the two programmes.

These are not, perhaps, the two most obvious companies to run a status matching programme. That said, it is certainly worth taking advantage if you qualify.

There is also an interesting route to getting status with a Priority Pass airport lounge card or an American Express Preferred Rewards Gold credit card.

What status levels are being matched?

Got Avis status?

If you have Avis Preferred Plus, you will receive Silver status in Rewards.

If you have Avis President’s Club status, you will receive Gold status in Rewards.

Using American Express Preferred Rewards Gold to get Avis Preferred Plus:

Before you rush off to check, American Express Platinum does not give you Avis Preferred Plus although once you have linked your Platinum card to your Avis Preferred account you receive discounted rates.

(The American Express Platinum deal with Hertz is more generous, getting you Hertz Five Star status. If you have Amex Platinum you can register for Hertz Five Star and all of the other status schemes via this well-hidden page of the Amex website.)

However, following the 2022 changes, American Express Preferred Rewards Gold DOES give you Avis Preferred Plus status. You can register for the benefit here. This will get you Silver status.

Using Priority Pass to get Avis Preferred Plus:

If you have a Priority Pass airport lounge card, even a free one via American Express, you qualify for free Avis Preferred Plus status.

This HfP article explains how to get Avis Preferred Plus status from a Priority Pass.

You need to enrol in Avis Preferred using the special code and then, once your Avis Preferred Plus membership is showing, you will be able to upgrade your account to Silver status.

Using a World Elite Mastercard to get Avis President’s Club:

If you have the HSBC Premier World Elite Mastercard, the Barclaycard Avios Plus Mastercard or a similar World Elite Mastercard, you join Avis at President’s Club level and get a match to Rewards Gold status. Use this website to claim your top tier Avis status.

Got status?

If you have Gold status in Rewards, you will receive Avis Preferred Plus membership.

Are these status levels worth having?

We wrote this review of Rewards here and you can see the details on the website here.

Silver status usually requires 10 nights per year whilst Gold requires 30 nights.

The benefits are rather nebulous. However, many hotels on the platform have agreed to give additional benefits to status members. The only guaranteed benefit is a two-hour additional late check-out for Gold members when booking a hotel marked ‘VIP’ on the site.

Silver members may receive free breakfast, free wi-fi or other hand-picked benefits when choosing a hotel on the ‘VIP’ list. You also get access to the price match promise which guarantees to reduce your rate if you find a lower price anywhere up to the point of check-in. This is a lot more flexible than most rate guarantee schemes.

Anecdotally, I know that the call centre is also often willing to cancel non-refundable bookings made by Gold members as a favour.

The key benefit of Rewards is the ability to get a free night for every 10 nights you stay as our review explains.

Details of Avis Preferred Plus can be found on its website here.

The ‘Plus’ level requires you to have done five rentals in the past year with a total value of €1,000+. Benefits are:

  • priority car availability
  • a free extra driver on every trip
  • a complimentary vehicle upgrade whenever possible

There is nothing radical here, especially as you get a free additional driver automatically whenever you book an Avis car via the British Airways / Avis partner site here.

Avis Preferred, at the basic level, is worth joining. You get a €15 voucher after your second rental and a free weekend rental after your third booking.

There is nothing life changing here, but if you use both and Avis it makes sense to upgrade your status if you can.

The main benefit for HfP readers, oddly, may be the ability to get Silver status via their American Express Preferred Rewards Gold or Priority Pass via their free Avis Preferred Plus status.

We always use Avis for our USA road trips and didn’t pick up before that having the Barclaycard Avios Plus card gave us Presidents Plus status. I was about to downgrade it but it might be worth keeping. My question is the Barclaycard is in my name with my hubby as the supp cardholder. He has the Avis Preferred account in his name as I don’t drive in the USA. I know it offers a free additional driver if it were in my name but I prefer the car hire to be in his name. Can I just upgrade his Avis Preferred account with him being the supplementary cardholder – or not – and also it says if you have any other partners linked to your account you lose that benefit. I normally book direct with Avis and not via the BA portal but I have my Avios account linked so we do earn Avios after each hire – so would we lose that by signing up to the Avis Presidents via the Barclaycard. Thanks

tried to register with – email never arrives to complete the process, their online chat is staffed by morons and no matter what they or I try, can’t make it work. If it’s this hard to just register then no way I’d trust them to book a hotel for me!

    • Stuart says:

Really surprised to hear this. I’ve been Gold with for a long time and their customer service has never failed me. There are times too, when I’ll book a non-refundable room and call up because plans have changed at the last minute and they’ve managed a refund.

  • Liz says:

Been trying for ages to set up a new account via the link but after filling in all the info I keep getting error code ES500 and then it removes my password and bank details – so I fill them in again and it does the same – anyone else getting the same issue. There doesnt seem to be a phone number for help

    • Neil says:

I have the same issue. I can’t even register for an account on the Avis website to link it later. Not the best start!

  • Liz says:

Does the free additional driver option not work for rentals in USA and Canada? It says the benefit is available if you are based in the UK but then it says loyalty benefits can only be redeemed in certain countries and USA and Canada are not listed. Not sure this is going to work for us.

    • Dan says:

True. However, by my experience, they always added it for free regardless, they also consider spouse or partner for free, without the need to add as second driver. Upgrade is another story, sometime given and others not.

Overall, I feel that the President status doesn’t’t add much, you get similar benefits with BA or any random deal

  • Peter says:

Woe betide anyone who needs absolutely anything at all from Avis “customer service”, at least here in Austria. Rentals won’t even reflect in the Avis Preferred account. €15 vouchers? Free weekend rentals? Hahahaaaa!
