How many tier points does each British Airways flight earn?

How many tier points do you earn from a British Airways flight?

We haven’t updated our tier point calculator since before the pandemic so it was time for a refresh.

It lists every British Airways flight from London together with the tier points that you will earn in British Airways Executive Club.

How many tier points does each British Airways flight earn?

Can’t you do this on the BA website?

Not in a full list, no.

If you want to know how many tier points you earn for a particular British Airways flight, there is no official list.  You need to go to ba.com and use the BA Tier Point Calculator page, route by route.

The official British Airways tier point calcuator isn’t ideal, especially if you want to plan a trip to maximise your tier point earning.  You cannot, for example, easily find which Club Europe routes earn 160 tier points for a return trip instead of the usual 80 tier points.

We have created this table as a one-stop reference – our own Head for Points British Airways tier point calculator.  It is a sister resource to our ‘list of Avios redemption pricing for all British Airways routes’ – albeit we need to update this in light of the recent long haul changes.

How many British Airways tier points do I earn flying to ….?

The list below calculates the tier points you earn for British Airways flights from London.

The tier points shown are for a one-way flight.

For simplicity we have shown all travel classes although an increasing number of long-haul routes do not have First Class.

To earn British Airways Executive Club status, you need to earn:

  • 300 tier points in a membership year for Bronze
  • 600 tier points in a membership year for Silver
  • 1,500 tier points in a membership year for Gold

This chart is ONLY for direct British Airways flghts. Tier point earning for partner airlines works slightly differently – flights under 2,000 miles are treated as short-haul (40 tier points each-way in Business) and the remainder as long-haul (140 or 160 tier points each-way in Business – the ultra-long Qantas flight from Heathrow to Perth shows as 240 tier points each-way).

You cannot earn status purely from partner flights. You also need four one-way cash flights on British Airways or Iberia, or two for Bronze, in your membership year.

Key:

  • ET/WT = Euro Traveller / World Traveller (short-haul economy and long-haul economy)
  • WTP = World Traveller Plus (long-haul premium economy)
  • CE/CW = Club Europe / Club World (short-haul business and long-haul business)

  • Stephen Eaves says:

Hi rob. I have booked a 5 day holiday from lgw to ace in March. Would I be right to assume this will produce 320 tier points. Thank you

    • Rob says:

If it meets the terms (5 nights hotel or car, booked via BA Hols) then yes.

  • Colin_Thames says:

Thinking how to maximise TPs at min cost. If one books, a connecting flight on the same ticket does anything that earns 140 points in CE/CW count as a long haul and therefore the connecting flight is free? And if so does the connecting flight also earn tier points.
Eg INV – LHR – Boston; or LHR – EDI – Palma

    • lumma says:

When I’ve looked at this it always seems very expensive. Find a 160 point route on the low fare finder then add say NCL or MAN on and it becomes far more expensive. It may be cheaper if was an EU starting point

      • Stu_N says:

Connecting flights aren’t free on cash bookings, that’s an Avios thing. Often the total isn’t too far off the sum of (say) EDI-LHR and LHR-NYC.

Google Flights is good for finding decent connecting flights, if you search from your preferred airport or airports to Europe/ USA or whatever, filter on OneWorld, Business and a max journey time to stop it showing overnight connections you can quickly see where the cheapest options are on the list or map. You’ll need to do a bit of work to weed out unappealing flight times and airport changes but it’s a good starting point.

    • dougzz99 says:

Optimising flights for TP/GBP is not difficult, just time consuming. For the USA it’s find the cheap starting point, recently Sofia and Budapest, Dublin always a good bet. Then flying to gateway hop-hop. So your Boston example would be say DUB-LHR-PHL-DCA-BOS for example. Earning 260 for the east coast.

      • Colin_Thames says:

Thank you all. About 5 years ago I booked a EDI-LHR-ORD Club ticket through BA on an AA codeshare, with BA connecting. My colleague flying direct from LHR got charged slightly more. Had assumed the connecting flight must’ve been free and/or taxes from EDI lower? Wondering if this policy still applies and if so what types of flights it works on

  • Novice says:

Totally OT but in forum you have to join and log in and I am too lazy…

When is Virgin likely to join SkyTeam everywhere it is saying March now. @Rob or @Rhys do you know anything for certain?

Before everyone goes off at me for posting this here, I apologise for hurting your sensibilities or whatever…

  • Sandra O'Brien says:

please can you explain why Tel Aviv gains 140tier points in Business for less than 5 hr flight whilst Amman only earns 80? It seems slightly anomalous

    Thanks

    • Rob says:

Tel Aviv is long haul and uses LH aircraft (777, 787). Amman is short haul and uses an A320, the same as you’d fly to Amsterdam in.

  • Slee says:

I need to earn 580 tier points and 2 eligible flights before 31 July 2023 to retain my silver status. I have an upcoming work trip to US (visiting NY, San Fran and Las Vegas). What is the best way to get to my target?

    • Rob says:

Should be fine. BA Business (or BA codeshare on AA) to NYC, AA business to West Coast and return – that’s 4 x 140 TP so 560 TP. If you can do AA or Alaska between Vegas and San Fran you’ll get a few more TP.
